New CSA

Last year's CSA eliminated our usual pick up spot and the next closest was a bit farther than I wanted to drive so we looked into others and found Three Sisters Community Farm which had a pick up location even closer and more convenient than the one last year and it allowed you to pick your items each week.  So far I am quite impressed.  Here are our first three shares:

June 15, 2017
green garlic, asparagus, radishes, mint, peas salad mix, strawberries

July 6, 2017
cucumbers, peas (2 bags), rhubarb, romaine lettuce, swiss chard (2 bunches)

July 13, 2017
cucumbers, carrots, curly kale, endive, escarole, potatoes, hakurei salad turnips, peas, scallions

Spring is here

Almost two weeks ago (February 27, I believe) I heard my first robins and then a few days later I spotted the first one.  That same week, I heard the red wing blackbirds as well and my first spring bulbs poked through.  The first to poke through were a few tulips with reddish stems.  Then my snowdrops poked through.  When we got some snow the next day, they disappeared but today I see that they are back even in the cold weather we are experiencing.

We have had a really mild and warm winter with little snow (other than the time we were gone in December) so I guess it is not surprising things are starting a bit earlier.  I just hope another cold spell and some snow (they are talking 2-4 inches on Monday) doesn't do damage to plants that have poke through a bit too early.

Broccoli, Cauliflower, and Cabbage

At my parents house we are growing broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage (and brussles sprouts).  Cabbage and cauliflower are new ones for us.  Here are some photos:

CSA Delivery - A bit heartbreaking this week...

Here is what I took home today:

Melons
Onions
Beets
Basil
Corn
Cauliflower

This week was a bit heartbreaking when I opened my box and found dozens of tomatoes, a few peppers, and lots of little potatoes, nightshades galor!  Fortunately the swap bin had two extra melons, gold beets, and more white and red onions, all great additions to the week.

I made a quick pesto with the basil, kale I still have growing at home, walnuts, garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper.  It was really tasty with supper and it will taste good on some eggs tomorrow morning.

CSA Delivery!

Check out the beautiful produce we got this week!
  • broccoli
  • sweet corn
  • sweet onions
  • cucumbers (including some funky round yellow ones)
  • zucchini/summer squash
  • red potatoes
  • lettuce
  • kalette greens
Tomatoes also came in today's box and oh it was so hard to put them in the swap box.  I hope whoever gets the tomatoes truly enjoys them.  But, I took some more swiss chard in exchange along with a couple extra funky cucumbers!

Our Third CSA Share

The excitement continues!

Here is what we received this week Thursday:

  • carrots
  • beets
  • cucumbers
  • summer squash
  • cabbage
  • leeks
  • sweet onions
  • dill
  • swiss chard

Swiss chard is one of my favorite greens so I swapped out a beet and a couple summer squashes for a second bunch of chard.  The chard and onions go so well in scrambled eggs.

Air Plant Flowered

I meant to post this a couple of weeks back.  In June my giant air plant flowered!  Once I bought an air plant with a flower on it but never has any of them in my care flowered, until now.

Yesterday, I sat in our backyard for a while and here is the show Mother Nature put on for me.
